Freezer problems are usually a door seal, a defrost failure (on frost-free uprights), a fan, or the unit working outside its temperature range. Chest freezers are simpler but can still lose their seal or their thermostat.
Common problems
Freezer not freezing
The thermostat, a defrost part, a fan, or the sealed system can all leave a freezer above 0°F.
Check first: Check the control setting, make sure the door closes fully, and feel whether air is moving inside on frost-free models.
When to call: Call if the temperature climbs above 10°F.
Frost building up in the freezer
Heavy frost means warm, humid air is getting in through the seal, or the defrost system on a frost-free model has quit.
Check first: Check the gasket and hinge, and look for frost on the back panel versus around the door.
When to call: Call if frost comes back quickly after a manual defrost.
Freezer making a new noise
A fan rubbing on ice, a worn motor, or a compressor straining to start are the usual sources.
Check first: Note when the noise happens and whether it stops when the door is open.
When to call: Call if the noise comes with rising temperatures.
Freezer door seal failing
A gasket that is torn, hard or folded lets moisture in and causes frost, sweating and long run times.
Check first: Do the dollar-bill test around the door or lid.
When to call: Call if the gasket is damaged; replacements are model-specific.
Freezer leaking water
Water usually comes from a blocked defrost drain or melting frost after a door was left open.
Check first: Check whether the water appears after a defrost cycle and whether the drain inside is iced.
When to call: Call if it keeps happening after you clear the frost.
Freezer running constantly
A freezer that never cycles off is often fighting a bad seal, a dirty coil, or a hot room.
Check first: Clean around the unit, check the seal, and give it a few inches of clearance.
When to call: Call if it runs nonstop and still cannot reach 0°F.
