An ice maker needs water at the right pressure, a freezer cold enough to freeze it, and a working harvest cycle. A clogged filter, a frozen fill tube, a failed water valve, or a warm freezer can each stop production.
Common problems
Ice maker not making ice
No ice usually means no water reaching the mold, a freezer that is too warm, or an ice maker module that has stopped cycling.
Check first: Make sure the ice maker is switched on, the bail arm is down, and the filter is not overdue.
When to call: Call if water is reaching the fridge but the ice maker never fills.
Ice maker making small or hollow cubes
Small or hollow cubes point to low water flow, often from an old filter, a partly frozen fill tube, or low household pressure.
Check first: Replace the filter if it is overdue and check that the supply valve is fully open.
When to call: Call if cube size does not recover after a new filter.
Ice maker leaking
Leaks come from an overfilling mold, a cracked fill cup, or a loose supply line behind the fridge.
Check first: Look behind the unit for a wet supply line and inside the freezer for ice spills.
When to call: Call if the water keeps returning.
Ice maker fill tube frozen
A fill tube freezes when the water valve drips or the freezer is too cold right at the inlet.
Check first: You may see ice blocking the spot where water enters the mold.
When to call: Call if it freezes again after thawing; the valve is often the cause.
Ice maker loud when it drops ice
Some clatter is normal. Grinding, buzzing or repeated clicking can mean a failing motor or a jammed ejector.
Check first: Check that ice is not jammed in the bin or chute.
When to call: Call if the noise repeats without ice dropping.
Ice tastes or smells bad
Old ice absorbs food odors, and an overdue filter or new plastic tubing can change the taste.
Check first: Dump the bin, replace the filter, and run a few batches before judging.
When to call: Call if the taste continues after a new filter.
