A dishwasher needs to fill, circulate water through the spray arms, and drain. Cloudy dishes, standing water and leaks usually trace back to a clogged filter, a failed pump, a stuck inlet valve, or the drain connection under the sink.
Common problems
Dishwasher not cleaning
Dirty dishes usually mean a clogged filter, blocked spray arms, or low water temperature.
Check first: Clean the filter, check that the spray arms spin freely, and run the kitchen tap hot before starting.
When to call: Call if the arms spin and the filter is clean but dishes are still dirty.
Dishwasher not draining
Standing water usually means a clogged filter, a blocked drain hose or garbage disposal knockout, or a failed drain pump.
Check first: Clean the filter and run the disposal. If the disposal is new, the knockout plug may still be in place.
When to call: Call if you hear the pump but water stays.
Dishwasher leaking
Leaks come from a worn door gasket, a cracked spray arm, the wrong detergent, or a loose connection underneath.
Check first: Use only dishwasher detergent, check the door gasket, and look under the sink for drips.
When to call: Call if water reaches the floor.
Dishwasher not drying
Many newer dishwashers dry with condensation, so plastic stays wet. On heated-dry models a failed element or empty rinse aid can be the cause.
Check first: Fill the rinse aid and use the heated-dry option if your model has one.
When to call: Call if metal and glass come out soaking wet.
Dishwasher making noise
Grinding or rattling often means debris in the pump or a spray arm hitting a tall item.
Check first: Check the filter and pump area for glass or seeds, and make sure the arms clear the racks.
When to call: Call if it grinds with an empty tub.
Dishwasher not starting
A dishwasher that will not start may have a door latch problem, a control lock turned on, or no power from the breaker or switch.
Check first: Check the child or control lock and make sure the door latches firmly.
When to call: Call if the panel is dead or it beeps and stops.
