Repair guide

Freezer Making Noise or Leaking Water

Freezers are simpler than refrigerators, so noises and leaks usually trace back to a handful of parts. On frost-free uprights, both problems often lead back to the defrost system.

Upright freezer with the door open in a garage

What usually causes it

  • Evaporator fan. A frost-free freezer has a fan behind the back panel. It squeals when the bearings wear and scrapes when frost reaches the blade.
  • Condenser fan. Uprights with a fan near the compressor rattle when the blade is dirty or loose.
  • Compressor and start relay. Clicking every few minutes, or a loud hum without cooling, points to the relay or compressor.
  • Defrost drain. On frost-free uprights, a blocked drain sends defrost water onto the freezer floor, where it refreezes or leaks out the door.
  • Drain pan. A cracked or shifted pan under the unit lets defrost water reach the floor.
  • Manual-defrost models. Water on the floor after a power outage or manual defrost is usually just melt that needs to be caught and wiped up.

Freezer making a new noise

A fan rubbing on ice, a worn motor, or a compressor straining to start are the usual sources.

Check first: Note when the noise happens and whether it stops when the door is open.

Freezer leaking water

Water usually comes from a blocked defrost drain or melting frost after a door was left open.

Check first: Check whether the water appears after a defrost cycle and whether the drain inside is iced.

Safe checks you can do

  • Listen with the door open and the door switch pressed to isolate the evaporator fan.
  • Check the floor of the freezer for a sheet of ice near the drain opening.
  • Pull the unit out and look at the drain pan and the back bottom area.
  • Make sure the unit is level so water runs toward the drain.
  • Clear a drain with warm water and a turkey baster only if you can reach it without removing panels.

Parts that fail most often

  • Evaporator fans are the most common noise source on frost-free uprights.
  • Defrost drains clog with debris and freeze.
  • Start relays on older units click loudly before they fail.

How your home affects it

In older homes

Older homes in the Houston area often have smaller kitchens and laundry closets built for smaller appliances, older wiring, and shut-off valves that have not been turned in years. Check that the refrigerator has its own outlet and a few inches of space behind it for the coil to breathe.

In new construction

Newer homes in the Houston area usually come with builder-grade appliances, and many early problems are installation issues rather than failed parts. Kinked water lines behind the fridge and units pushed too tight against the wall are common finds.

In apartments and condos

In apartments, condos and townhomes around the Houston area, space is tight and the building often has its own rules for access, parking and shut-off valves. Refrigerators in tight alcoves run hotter and longer; clearance matters.

In garages

Plenty of homes in the Houston area keep a second fridge, a freezer or the laundry in the garage, where summer heat regularly passes 100°F. Check the model plate for its rated temperature range; many refrigerators are not built for a hot Houston garage.

During storm season

Storm season around the Houston area brings power outages, surges and sometimes flooding, and appliances often show problems right after the lights come back on. After an outage, keep the doors shut and use a thermometer to decide about food. If the unit does not cool within a few hours of power returning, call us.

When to call for repair

  • Noise comes with warming temperatures.
  • Ice keeps forming on the freezer floor.
  • Water reaches flooring or an outlet.

If the freezer is warming, keep the lid or door closed and move food to a working freezer or a cooler with ice. Do not chip frost with metal tools.
