What usually causes it
- Fan blade hitting ice. A scraping or rattling from the freezer often means frost has built up around the evaporator fan. That points back to a defrost problem.
- Worn evaporator or condenser fan motor. A squeal, chirp or growl that changes when you open the freezer door usually comes from a fan motor with worn bearings.
- Start relay. A loud click every few minutes, followed by silence, is often a start relay or overload trying to start the compressor.
- Compressor. A loud knock when the compressor shuts off, or a much louder hum than before, can mean worn mounts or internal wear.
- Ice maker and water valve. A buzz while the ice maker fills, or grinding during harvest, can mean low water pressure, a failing inlet valve or a jammed ice maker.
- Drain pan and loose panels. Rattles are sometimes as simple as the drain pan or back cover vibrating against the cabinet.
Refrigerator making a new noise
Clicking, buzzing, grinding or a loud hum usually points to a fan blade hitting ice, a worn fan motor, or a compressor relay struggling to start.
Check first: Note where the sound comes from (freezer, back panel, bottom) and when it happens. A short video helps us a lot.
Safe checks you can do
- Note where the sound comes from: inside the freezer, the back bottom of the unit, or the ice maker.
- Open the freezer door and press the door switch. If the noise changes, it is probably the evaporator fan.
- Pull the unit out and listen at the back with the kick plate removed. That is where the condenser fan and compressor live.
- Make sure the refrigerator is level and nothing is touching the back or sides.
- Record a short video with sound. It helps a technician narrow down the cause.
Parts that fail most often
- Evaporator fan motors are the most common source of new noise.
- Condenser fans pick up dust and lint, which unbalances the blade.
- Older compressors with failing start relays click loudly before they stop starting at all.
How your home affects it
In older homes
Older homes in the Houston area often have smaller kitchens and laundry closets built for smaller appliances, older wiring, and shut-off valves that have not been turned in years. Check that the refrigerator has its own outlet and a few inches of space behind it for the coil to breathe.
In new construction
Newer homes in the Houston area usually come with builder-grade appliances, and many early problems are installation issues rather than failed parts. Kinked water lines behind the fridge and units pushed too tight against the wall are common finds.
In apartments and condos
In apartments, condos and townhomes around the Houston area, space is tight and the building often has its own rules for access, parking and shut-off valves. Refrigerators in tight alcoves run hotter and longer; clearance matters.
In garages
Plenty of homes in the Houston area keep a second fridge, a freezer or the laundry in the garage, where summer heat regularly passes 100°F. Check the model plate for its rated temperature range; many refrigerators are not built for a hot Houston garage.
During storm season
Storm season around the Houston area brings power outages, surges and sometimes flooding, and appliances often show problems right after the lights come back on. After an outage, keep the doors shut and use a thermometer to decide about food. If the unit does not cool within a few hours of power returning, call us.
When to call for repair
- The noise comes with rising temperatures.
- The unit clicks on and off repeatedly and the compressor does not run.
- You hear grinding from the fan area of the freezer.
Never puncture refrigerant lines or chip ice off the coil with a knife. Keep a thermometer in the fresh-food section; food safety follows the thermometer, not how cold the shelf feels.
