What usually causes it
- Clogged grease filters. Mesh and baffle filters fill with grease and block airflow.
- Stuck backdraft damper. A flap at the top of the hood or at the wall or roof cap can stick closed. On new installs, tape left on the damper is a common find.
- Ducting. Long runs, many elbows, crushed flex duct or a duct smaller than the hood outlet all reduce airflow.
- Blower wheel. Grease buildup unbalances the wheel and makes it vibrate.
- Motor bearings. A growl or squeal that gets louder over time.
- Recirculating mode. A hood set up to recirculate moves less air than a ducted hood, and its charcoal filter needs replacing.
Range hood making noise
Rattling or roaring usually means a loose filter, a damaged fan blade, or a worn motor bearing.
Check first: Reseat the filters and check for loose screws.
Range hood with poor airflow
Weak suction usually comes from greasy filters, a stuck backdraft damper, or a duct that is too long or crushed.
Check first: Clean or replace the filters first.
Safe checks you can do
- Wash metal filters in hot soapy water or the dishwasher.
- Hold a tissue at the filter with the fan on high. It should be pulled firmly.
- Check outside at the wall or roof cap for a flap that opens when the fan runs.
- Replace charcoal filters on recirculating hoods.
Parts that fail most often
- Clogged filters are the most common cause of weak airflow.
- Dampers stick on new installs and on caps exposed to weather.
How your home affects it
In older homes
Older homes in the Houston area often have smaller kitchens and laundry closets built for smaller appliances, older wiring, and shut-off valves that have not been turned in years. Many older kitchens recirculate air instead of venting outside, so filters do all the work.
In new construction
Newer homes in the Houston area usually come with builder-grade appliances, and many early problems are installation issues rather than failed parts. Ducted hoods and over-the-range microwaves sometimes have a damper that was never opened.
In apartments and condos
In apartments, condos and townhomes around the Houston area, space is tight and the building often has its own rules for access, parking and shut-off valves. An over-the-range microwave or recirculating hood is often the only kitchen ventilation.
In garages
Plenty of homes in the Houston area keep a second fridge, a freezer or the laundry in the garage, where summer heat regularly passes 100°F. Outdoor kitchen hoods need weather-rated parts and regular cleaning.
During storm season
Storm season around the Houston area brings power outages, surges and sometimes flooding, and appliances often show problems right after the lights come back on. Surges can take out hood and microwave control boards; mention any recent outage when you call.
When to call for repair
- The fan gets louder and airflow stays weak after cleaning filters.
- The damper does not open.
- The blower vibrates or scrapes.
Turn off the breaker before removing the filters or light covers if the hood has exposed wiring.
